Glossary Unit 5 (Social Sciences)

National sovereignty- National sovereignty basically refers to a legal expression by a state/nation, of the right to self-government.
Constitutional Monarchy- A monarchy in which the powers of the ruler are restricted to those granted under the constitution and laws of the nation.
The Crown- Monarchy or kingship.
Arbitrator- To settle or decide; achieve a settlement between parties
Decentralized Government- Its a form of government with its top level decision making processes dispersed throughout the system rather than concentrated in one person,place or legislative body.
Motion of no confidence- Is a statement or vote which states that a person in a superior position is no longer deemed fit to hold that position.
Ministers- A person appointed to head a government department.
Municipality - A city, town, or district enjoying some degree of local self-government.
Town Council- An elected group of people who are responsible for public areas and services, such as roads, parks etc, in a particular town.
Mayor- The chairman and civic head of a municipal corporation in many countries
Councilors- a member of a council.
Province- A territory governed as a unit of a country or empire.
Self-government- The state of being self-controlled.
Statute of Autonomy- An enactment of a legislative body expressed in a formal document. Subsidiarity- The principle of devolving decisions to the lowest practical level.
Autonomous Community- Any of the seventeen self-governing first-level political subdivisions of Spain.
Post-industrial society- Is a concept in sociology describing a certain stage of society's development when the service sector generates more wealth than the manufacturing sector of the economy.
Well-being- The state of being healthy, happy, or prosperous
Life expectancy- The probable number of years remaining in the life of an individual or class of people determined statistically, affected by such factors as heredity, physical condition, nutrition, and occupation.
Illiteracy- The condition of being unable to read and write.
Extended family- A family group that consists of parents, children, and other close relatives, often living in close proximity.
Nuclear family- The part of a family that includes only the father, mother, and children
Single parent family
Same sex marriages- Two people of the same sex who live together as a family

Do you think that having a Constitution is important for us?

Yes, of course it is important because we must maintain some rules. We live in a society and we are surrounded by people all around us so we have to work together and respect each other.

Glossary Unit 4 (English)


Mohawk: It’s a type of hairstyle.
Let down: To disappoint.
Stilettos: High and thing high heels.
Hence: Therefore.
Survey: Questioner.
Bum-bag: A small bag worn on a belt, round the waist.
Cuisine: Food.
Fashion stakes: World of fashion.
Sloppy-joes: Tracksuit pants.


EXPRESSIONS
1. To ask for the moon means to make unreasonable demands for things or to wish something impossible to achieve or to obtain.
2. When you hold the fort it means that you take care of a place when the person normally in change is away.
3. Under the table: is a phrase used to describe secretive behaviour often suggesting corruption or illegality.
4. To horse around means to behave in a silly way making noise and causin distruption.
5. When you say someone has chickened out of something you mean they have failed to do something or they haven't tried to do it because they were afraid.
6. when you say someone is a wise old owl you mean they are very experienced in life.
7. A night owl is someone who stays up late into the night.
8. When you say someone is in safe hands you mean they are being cared for someone who is confident and skilled.
9. A safe pair of hands is a similar expression to refers to someone who can be trusted to do a good job avoiding mistakes.
10. If someone tells you to hold your tongue it means they want you to stop talking because they don't like what you are saying.
11. If a situation is black and white it means you have a clean opinion about it. You can easily see what you think is right and wrong.
12. The phrase money doesn't grow on trees means you must not spend too much money as there is limited amount of it.
13. The phrase money is no object means that you have a lot of money available to spend.
14. Let the chips fall where they may means to allow things to happen no matter what the consequences are.
15. When you say something is as cheap as chips you mean is very cheap.
16. If you are chasing your tail you are busy doing a lot of different things but not achieving very much.

Glossary Unit 4 (Social Sciences)

Free movement- Legal permission for goods, capital, services, or workers to leave one country and enter another country without extra taxes, legal documents, official limits, etc.
Common market - A group of countries that have a formal agreement for trading among themselves and how they trade with countries outside the group.
Monetary union- Two or more countries with a single currency, or different currencies having a fixed mutual exchange rate monitored and controlled by one central bank.
Cohesion- Tendency to unite.
Treaty - A formal agreement or contract between two or more states, such as an alliance or trade arrangement.
Heterogeneity - The quality or state of being heterogeneous.
Homogeneous- Composed of unrelated or differing parts or elements.
Outsourcing- To work to another company.
Fragmentation - A piece broken off or detached.
Development - The act or process of growing or progression. 
Budget - An itemized summary of expected income and expenditure of a country or company
Citizenship - The condition or status of a citizen, with its rights and duties.
Duty - A task or action that a person is bound to perform for moral or legal reasons
Funds - Money that is readily available.
Investment - The purchase of goods that are not consumed today but are used in the future to create wealth.
Subsidy -A financial aid supplied by a government, as to industry, for reasons of public welfare, the balance of payments, etc.
Skeptical- Not convinced that something is true.
Surplus - A quantity or amount in excess of what is required.
Seafaring- The act of travelling by sea.
Outskirts - Outlying or bordering areas,districts,etc.
Profitable - Affording gain, benefit, or profit.
Highway- A public road that all may use.
Motorway - A main road for fast-moving traffic.
Hierarchy - A system of persons or things arranged in a graded order.
GDP - Gross Domestic Product. is the market value of all officially recognized final goods and services produced within a country in a year, or other given period of time.
CAP - Common Agricultural Policy. The system in the European Union for setting prices for farm products and limits on the amounts that can be produced, and for organizing various payments to farmers.
CFP – Common Fisheries Policy.Set of rules for managing European fishing fleets and for conserving fish stocks.
